27th August Review
This month’s review comes to you courtesy of Comedy Basement regular and all round hairy person, Matthew Collins.
The Comedy Basement once again attracted a large crowd this month who spurned the musical stylings of Dizzee Rascel et al. at the Belsonic event happening in the square across the road. And they we’re rewarded for their faithfulness by a cracking show presided over by hirsute humourmeister Matthew Collins.
First up was Belfast’s funniest Muslim comedian (also its only Muslim comedian, but that’s an indictment of Belfast’s diversity and not Bellal). A strong opening act from a guy who I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of.
There was a strong element of crowd participation throughout the night from many acts. Many will have gone home with Graeme Watson’s questions in a box theme ringing in their ears, and will remember where they were the day such insightful questions were answered. (But fuck them and their Bourgeois expectations!!)
Morgan Hearst returned to the basement where he lost his comedy virginity to do an impressive turn and close the first half. It’s great to have places like the Comedy Basement and the Pavilion for new acts to cut their teeth and Morgan is coming on strong.
In the second half a table of guys in the front row had their moment in the sun. They had come to see support act Shane Todd and were not disappointed. The theme of audience participation for the night was continued and at least one young lady is going home with a smile on her face after a rummage in a particularly lucky pocket. (Not sure which of the two parties involved should be considered lucky in this case).
Finally the night was closed in style with the Lovable Lurgan Lad Micky Bartlett. Micky charmed us all with quick gags, perfect impressions (of Yoda doing impressions) and just general hilarity. This man will go far and don’t be surprised if he’s not on TV soon. Seriously, don’t be surprised – Find Me the Funny hits our screens on September 11th.
There you have it!
Stay tuned to the website for upcoming details on our next Comedy Basement gig on Thursday 24th September.
